Historisches Museum Basel - Barfüsserkirche – Contacts & Location
Description
The Basel Historical Museum in the Barfüsser Church has been exhibiting selected topics on the history of Basel from prehistoric times to the present day since 1894.
Ecclesiastical works of art from the time before the Reformation form a focal point, among which the Basel Dance of Death and the Basel Cathedral Treasure are among the highlights. In the basement, the Basel tapestries with the life and fantasy worlds of the Middle Ages, the collections of the Renaissance and Baroque periods with the Kunstkammer as a model of the world and the rich archaeological heritage of the region are on display under the guiding theme of "Ways of Knowing the World". Other cultural and historical highlights include the Coin Cabinet and the Burgundian Loot.
Housed in the Barfüsserkirche since 1894, Basel Historical Museum presents selected aspects of the history of Basel from prehistoric times to the present.
Especially worthy of note here are the works of pre-Reformation sacred art such as the Basel Dance of Death and Basel Cathedral Treasury. The section called "Understanding the World" installed in the basement comprises a magnificent array of medieval tapestries with their fantasy worlds and scenes of real life, the Renaissance and Baroque collections grouped together in one "Great Cabinet of Curiosities", and Basel's rich archaeological heritage. Among the other highlights here are the coin cabinet and Burgundian Booty.
Le Musée historique de Bâle presents since 1894 in the old Barfüsserkirche the thèmes choisis de l'histoire de Bâle, de la Préhistoire à nos jours.
Religious works of art, such as the danse macabre and the trésor de la cathédrale, place a special emphasis on the era before the Reformation. Below, the exhibition "Les chemins de la connaissance du monde" presents the everyday life and the imaginary world of the Middle Ages, with the tapestries of the medieval bâloises hautes en couleurs, as well as the collections from the Renaissance to the Baroque era, in particular a large cabinet of curiosities reproducing the universe in miniature. The rich archaeological heritage of the region, which dates back to the Celtic period, is also present along with other fine cultural collections such as the cabinet of coins and the butin bourguignon.
