Historisches Museum Basel - Haus zum Kirschgarten – Contacts & Location
Description
The Haus zum Kirschgarten was built between 1775 and 1780 for the "Bändelherren" (silk ribbon manufacturer) and colonel Johann Rudolf Burckhardt.
The architecture by Johann Ulrich Büchel testifies to the client's high standards of representation and marks a high point of early classicism. Even Masonic ideas were incorporated into the spatial concept. It has served as a residential museum since 1951. The majority of the exhibition rooms are dedicated to bourgeois living spaces of the 18th and 19th centuries in Basel. These are joined by important specialist collections or cabinet exhibitions such as Sheikh Ibrahim.
Haus zum Kirschgarten was built for the silk ribbon manufacturer and army colonel Johann Rudolf Burckhardt between 1775 and 1780.
The architect Johann Ulrich Büchel designed a mansion worthy of his client's wealth and status which is also a tour de force of early Neoclassical style, influenced in part by Masonic concepts. The mansion has been a museum of domestic culture since 1951. Most of the interior is devoted to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century period rooms formerly inhabited by Basel's affluent bourgeoisie. But the museum also houses several special collections and hosts mini-exhibitions, such as that on Sheikh Ibrahim.
L'hôtel particulier du Kirschgarten fut construit de 1775 à 1780 par l'architecte Ulrich Büchel pour un fabricant de rubans de soie bâlois, Johann Rudolf Burckhardt.
It responded to the owner's representative requirements and also marked a culmination of architecture at the beginning of classicism, with an interior design concept influenced to some extent by the French-Macron spirit. The house became a museum of the home in 1951 and the majority of the pieces are painted in the bourgeois style of the XVIIe and XIXe centuries. D'importantes collections spécialisées, ainsi que des expositions thématiquescomme celle dédiée au Cheik Ibrahim y sont également présentées.
