Description
Why Austrian wine anyway?
Apart from the fact that Austrian winegrowers are storming the wine charts and securing the top spots in the national "Falstaff", "International Trophy for Regional Red Wine Blends", "Decanter World Wine Awards", etc., there are other very personal reasons that have seduced me. there are other very personal reasons that have attracted me to Austrian wine.
The first reason is my love of wine as a cultural asset.
The second reason is that I have been spending my vacations in Burgenland since my childhood, as my mother is from Burgenland. Over time, I got to know the wines and the winegrowers personally at various wine events, and today they produce top wines that always attract attention internationally and trigger an ahaa effect.
The third reason is that Austrian wines are becoming increasingly popular, even here in Switzerland. The best known are of course Grüner Veltliner, Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch. For example, Grüner Veltliner is available in a wide variety of styles, from fresh, light and crisp to classic, peppery and full-bodied to dense, complex and yet light-footed, usually without barrique ageing.
The traditional typical red local grapes are the fruity, charming Zweigelt and the elegant Blaufränkisch, which is particularly impressive with its aroma of dark berries and its strong tannin structure. These two grape varieties feel very much at home in the warm climate of Burgenland.
Many wine lovers and wine experts describe Burgenland as a land of diversity - and rightly so. The wine palette ranges from fruity, mineral-influenced white wines to strong, expressive red wines and world-famous noble sweet specialties. There are just as many reasons for this incomparable variety of wines in Burgenland. From the terroir to the structure of the vineyards and the technological know-how of the winegrowers to historical influences, this complex wine region is characterized not only by an immense variety of wine styles, but also - and this is a decisive aspect - by very good quality. The winegrowers are primarily responsible for this. Many wineries have invested in state-of-the-art cellars, which are also architecturally impressive. The quality development that began in the late 80s and early 90s is being consistently continued.
There are therefore many reasons to get to know the wines from our neighboring country of Austria better.
I am sure that you too, like my friends and acquaintances, will soon be convinced by the excellent white varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Gelber Muskateller, Traminer, red varieties Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Caberne Sauvignon and the excellent red cuvées, to name just a few.
